The Guyana Forestry Commission(GFC) has announced its intention to do one hundred percent inventory of the forest.
Chairman of GFC’s board Jocelyn Dow said the inventory will be an ancillary initiative to compliment the implementation of the second phase of the Guyana REDD+ Monitoring Reporting & Verification System (MRVS).
The inventory is expected to help the GFC with the distribution of concessions in the industry. “It will be that the person who is applying for it will be able to tell exactly what they are going in for (and) how much is on the ground,” Dow said.
Meanwhile, Dow said the GFC will be working closely with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to ensure reclamation of mined out areas. “We want to make sure that they can perhaps do the same level of zoning and closing of areas so that we could do the reforestation,” she explained.
The GFC has been undertaking several initiatives aimed at improving the functioning of the agency. Recently, the Commission received the first tranche of monies for the implementation of the MRVS. This second phase will see data that has been collected over the years being used to inform decisions by policy makers in the natural resource sector.
