GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The Ministry of Natural Resources has hired a communications firm to engage and consult with indigenous peoples, forest-dependent communities and other key stakeholders of the programme to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).
Over the next 24 months, the Spain-based Centre of Partnerships for Development (CAD) will carry out consultations and outreach activities to support REDD+ readiness in Guyana. The aim is to ensure stakeholders clearly understand and are equipped with the knowledge to allow for their active participation in REDD+ activities including development of a REDD+ Strategy for Guyana.
Ministry and CAD representatives officially inked the US$768, 138 contract on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Georgetown. Already, a CAD team comprising local expertise, has started mobilising for their work programme here.
The consultant is mandated to identify the most appropriate approach for the engagements including development of a REDD+ Communication and Outreach Strategy and Action Plan and related support materials for conducting the engagement sessions. The activities and materials will reflect the native language translations to ensure inclusivity, understanding, transparency and accountability in REDD+.
The consultancy is part of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF-REDD+) Project being executed by the Ministry’s Project Execution Unit (PEU) with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) as local donor partner. FCPF supports Guyana’s readiness of institutions, policies and framework for implementation and future REDD+ programmes.
CAD has worked on REDD+ with governments, communities and donors such as the World Bank, developing communication materials and documenting initiatives in various countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Liberia.
