Common Name: Blackheart
Scientific Name: Acosmium praeclara
Wood Appearance: Blackheart wood is characterized by a heartwood that is distinctly darker (Blackheart) than the sapwood which ranges from dark reddish-brown to deep chocolate brown.
Physical Properties: Blackheart is a strong heavy timber, with an air-dried density (at 12% moisture content) reported as 900–1100 kg/m³. This high density contributes to its robust nature. This species is generally has straight to interlock grains. Blackheart is very durable and resistant to decay and insect attack.
Mechanical Properties: A very hard, tough, and strong timber, possessing satisfactory mechanical strength. Its bending strength (Modulus of Rupture, MOR) is 142 N/mm² at 12% moisture content. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) is at 15104 N/mm² (at 12% MC). The crushing strength is 64 N/mm² (at 12% MC). These values are indicative of a timber suitable for demanding structural applications.
Uses: Blackheart is suited for a variety of applications. It is particularly suitable for Heavy construction, industrial flooring, bridge timbers, marine work (piles, wharves), high-density furniture components and tool handles.
