The Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) is deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred along the Mabura Road on Friday 11th April 2025, which resulted in the untimely death of Mr. Williams and left Mr. Deon Wilson with injuries. The Commission extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Williams and wishes Mr. Wilson a full and speedy recovery.
This unfortunate accident serves as a sobering reminder of the need for heightened safety on Guyana’s roadways. The GFC is urging all Forest Sector Operators (FSOs) especially those operating heavy-duty vehicles such as logging trucks to exercise extreme caution while traversing our (hinterland) roadways.
As part of its ongoing commitment to promoting safe forestry practices, the GFC is reminding stakeholders of several important road safety measures:
- All forms of transportation vehicles or vessels must be fully functional, and certified by the relevant Government Agencies
- Persons operating the different modes of transport are fully certified and properly trained in the use of these forms of transport, inclusive of all safety measures
- Safety measures to be properly implemented at all times, include:
- Persons are not permitted to be on top of the forest produce being transported
- Persons are not allowed to be on the tray of the vehicle transporting forest produce
- All vehicles transporting forest produce must have a triangular reflector prominently displayed at the extreme end of the forest produce being transported
- All vehicles transporting forest produce must have at least two (2) traffic cones which are to be placed at the front and back of the vehicle transporting forest produce, in the event of the vehicle having to be parked on the roadway
- Forest produce being transported must be in compliance with the designated weight limits
- Forest produce being transported must be properly secured with use of the recommended straps in sufficient quantity.
The GFC remains committed to supporting FSOs with guidance on safety protocols and calls on all FSOs to recommit to responsible practices on our roads.
